Small Object Photography Online Photo Evaluation FAQ

Q. Why should I hire you to just look at my photos and tell me what's wrong with them?
A: If you are reading this FAQ, I suspect that taking photos is one of those tasks that have become a frustrating chore. By evaluating your photos online, I can offer you clear advice and practical knowledge that will make photo taking much less taxing...and maybe even fun!

Q. I'm not sure I'm up for someone tearing apart my skills as a photographer!
A: Being an artist myself, I know how scary it is to present any work for criticism. Because of this, my method of assistance is based on kind and constructive feedback.

My goal is always to provide clear insight and helpful information that will help you improve your skills and give you the knowledge to take better photos with the equipment you have so you can feel great about the way you represent your work!

Q. What if my equipment is really old? Will I have to buy a new camera?
A: There are many older model cameras on the market that are very well suited for online product photography. If you provide your make and model number of your camera I will research the pros and cons about using that camera for your photos.

However, if the cons outweigh the pros, I'll offer you a range of camera models for you to consider so you can shop for a new camera with a more solid understanding of the features you'll need for great product shots.

Q. How do I give you my shop information?
A: After you complete your payment for an Online Photo Evaluation, you will be taken to a new page that contains a short intake form to fill out and submit. The form asks basic questions about your photography equipment and experience such as: "What is the make and model of your camera?" and "What type of lighting setup do you normally use?"

I'll then email you a confirmation with any questions I have for you about your setup and/or product.

Q. What if I don't know the make and model number of my camera?
A: If you aren't near your camera at the time you are filling out the form, feel free to email me that information separately to marlo[at]smallobjectphotography.com along with any other questions you might have.

Q. What kind of information do you send back after the evaluation?
A: You will receive:

  • A detailed description of suggested camera settings
  • Suggestions for lighting arrangements and composition adjustments
  • Quick lessons to help you understand the basics of small object product photography
  • A summary of goals for improvement to help you focus your efforts
  • PLUS: One included follow up email -or- 1/2 hour phone call for you to ask questions and get answers after you receive your evaluation package
Also, depending on your individual needs, additional materials might include links to websites for inspiration, suggestions for equipment upgrades and basic photo editing advice.

Q. Will you teach me how to use Photoshop?
A: Any advice offered regarding post-production photo editing (e.g. Photoshop) will be the very basics needed to improve your photos quickly - brightness / contrast, etc. My overall goal is to help you take better photos within your camera thus minimizing the need for lots of post-production adjustments.

Q. How long does it take to receive my evaluation results?
A: It can take up to 2 weeks depending on my current schedule, however most evaluations are completed and emailed back to in less than one week. If your evaluation is going to take longer than 2 weeks, I will contact you directly with a firm deadline date.

Q. What if the evaluation you send me doesn't seem to help me take better photos?
A: Please remember, practice is the key to any skill. If the information provided does not help you understand how to take better photos of your work please contact me directly! I would really appreciate the opportunity to try to help you further via email or phone at no extra charge prior to an official refund request.

Q. What if the evaluation you send me just isn't helpful at all? Do you offer refunds?
A: Yes! Your satisfaction is important to me! If you are very unsatisfied with the service I provide, I will gladly refund your purchase price in the form of a PayPal refund.

Q. Do you teach classes on small object product photography?
A: Yes, I do! If you are near the Seattle, WA area, check out my Small Object Photography Class Information Page and then contact me so we can set up a quick phone evaluation to make sure the information I have to offer is the right thing for you.
